Baltimore Liposuction -
Procedure, Recovery and Results
Dr. Michael Cohen and Dr. Larry Lickstein are 2 of the areas most prominent plastic surgeons who are certified to perform both tumescent and ultrasonically assisted liposuction. The tumescent, or traditional, method of liposuction is best utilized for under the chin, in the thighs, hips, knees, calves and buttocks. Ultrasonic liposuction
is often used in conjunction with traditional liposuction to obtain a
finer result. Ask, at your consultation, which technique is best for
you.
Indications:
- Localized fat deposits that will not respond to regular diet and exercise.
- Disproportionate areas of the body due to localized fat cells.
- Areas of the body that will not respond to traditional liposuction.
Intended Result:
- To remove localized fat deposits that will not respond to exercise or traditional weight loss techniques.
- To improve the contour of the body by removing unwanted bulges.
- To look and feel better in clothes and/or swim suits.
- To improve overall appearance and self image.
Procedure Description:
- Tumescent Technique- through a tiny, strategically placed
incision a narrow cannula is placed underneath the skin. The cannula is
used to inject monitored amounts of fluid to help loosen the fat cells.
The cannula is then manipulated back and forth in order to break up the
fat cells and vacuum them out.
- Ultrasonically Assisted Technique- through a strategically placed
incision a specialized probe is placed underneath the skin. This probe
uses sonar waves to melt the fat and then extract it. UAL leaves less
bruising than the tumescent technique; however, it requires larger
incisions. This technique is not indicated for all areas of the body.
Length of Procedure:
- Liposuction can take from one to five hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure and the number of areas addressed.
- This surgery is done on an outpatient basis with either IV sedation
or general anesthesia. You will be able to rest following your surgery
in the comfort of your own home.
Recovery & Aftercare:
- Patients may experience some degree of bruising, swelling and tenderness.
- You will be placed into a form fitting compression garment to help
keep the swelling to a minimum and expedite the healing process. This
garment should be worn for about six weeks following surgery.
- Bed rest the day of surgery is recommended.
- Limit activity for the next two days following surgery.
- Avoid strenuous activities for about four to six weeks.
- Return to work in about one to two weeks.
Insurance Guidelines:
- Liposuction is deemed a cosmetic procedure and is therefore not covered by insurance.
Additional Procedures:
- Patients who have skin laxity in their abdominal area may
benefit from having a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) along with
liposuction for optimal results.
- Fat transfers/injections are an option for patients that choose to
have their fat harvested and re-injected into deep facial lines or acne
scars.
* Please discuss these additional options with the doctor.
**NOTE: The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for
