What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a procedure that uses implants to enlarge small breasts and balance breasts of different size or proportion. Baltimore breast enhancement specialists use silicone or saline implants.
Why have Breast Augmentation?
Women have many different reasons for choosing breast augmentation. The Cosmetic Surgery Center of Maryland offers several types of procedures to:
- Enhance the size, shape or contour of their breasts
- Improve the balance of your figure
- Correct the loss of breast volume and firmness due to pregnancy, nursing, weight-loss or age
- Achieve symmetry with breast size due to underdevelopment or as a reconstructive need
- Improve the fit of clothing and swimsuits
- Improve overall appearance, confidence and self image
When interested in getting a breast augmentation, Baltimore patients need to understand that the ideal size and shape for their breasts depends on both their body’s frame and their own personal preferences. Our Baltimore breast enhancement specialists work closely with each patient to create a breast surgery plan that specifically matches her desires and image of her breast’s ideal shape to her body’s form and function.
Types of Breast Implants
Women now have more options than ever before in choosing a comfortable, safe, natural-looking implant for a breast enhancement. Implant options can be narrowed to two types: Silicone (gel) and Saline (salt water). There is now a new generation of silicone gel implants, called MemoryGel(TM), recently approved by the FDA. You will be able to talk about those options with our Baltimore breast augmentation experts during consultation.

The Consultation:
Because we always put safety first, our specialists begin every consultation by discussing your overall health and well-being.
Our next considerations are:
- Your goals for the outcome of the surgery. Our Baltimore breast lift and breast augmentation experts work with you to determine that your expectations for your post-surgery breast size are realistic and attainable.
- Your frame and current breast size, shape and width. Are you hoping to lose a significant amount of weight either before or after surgery? What size breasts would be most appropriate for your body frame?
- The amount of sagging you presently experiencing. This, too, affects how our physicians will perform the surgery.
About the Procedure:
Your Baltimore breast enhancement surgeon will make a small incision, usually located under the lower portion of the breast near the chest wall. A pocket is created for the implant either in the breast tissue or the chest wall muscle. Once this pocket is created, the implant is carefully placed, centered beneath the nipple and the skin is sutured.
A breast augmentation takes approximately one hour. This surgery is done on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia. Because safety is always our first concern, we, at our Baltimore breast enhancement center, always work with board-certified anesthesiologists to ensure that your surgery is as safe as possible. Following your surgery, you will be able to rest in the comfort of your own home.
Although patients are usually back at work in less than one week, breast implants still require time to heal after a breast augmentation. Baltimore plastic surgeons make sure their patients understand that. This is the body’s natural response to recent surgery. It takes three to six months for the implants to settle and relax and give the kind of natural look that patients seek. This is something that patients need to consider before undergoing a breast augmentation. Our physicians will discuss this matter at your pre-surgery consultation. And if you’re thinking of breast augmentation surgery with a specific timeframe in mind, try to leave a window of at least six to twelve weeks.
Recovery & Aftercare:
Following surgery, Baltimore breast enhancement patients should expect some post-operation effects and should follow specific instructions as described below.
- Patients may experience some degree of bruising, swelling and tenderness.
- Bed rest the day of surgery is recommended.
- Limit activity for the next two days following surgery.
- Avoid strenuous activities for about one to two weeks.
- Patients can typically return to work within the first week.
- Our doctors may recommend a sports bra be worn for a couple of weeks following surgery.
Additional Procedures:
A breast lift may be used in conjunction with breast augmentation to enhance the overall position of the new breasts. Our surgeons will discuss this possibility with you during your consultation.
Insurance Guidelines:
In Baltimore, breast enhancement is usually deemed cosmetic in nature and is therefore not covered by insurance, unless the indication for surgery was due to breast reconstruction.
**NOTE: The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for any given individual can only be determined through a consultation with our surgeons.
