Once injected into the muscle, Botox blocks the release of the chemical transmitter acetylcholine, gently putting the muscle to rest and preventing the formation of dynamic wrinkles in this area.
Dermal fillers are used to smooth away static wrinkles. These wrinkles are already etched into the skin, without any muscle action. Fillers like Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm and Radiesse augment the body’s own collagen, plumping the wrinkle so it disappears. Restylane, Juvederm and Radiesse are all FDA approved for the treatment of facial wrinkling. They can also be used to enhance the smile, making thin lips appear fuller and more sensuous.
Treatment with both Botox and fillers takes just minutes, but results appear within a day or two and last for months. Juvederm, in fact, has been shown to last up to one year and Radiesse may last for 18 months or more.
